On November 15th, 2019, the various clubs within Monroe Township High School took part in the 3rd annual Astronomy Night. The event helped spread awareness about current environmental issues, along with information regarding advancements and technology in space. Amateur and professional astronomy lovers alike were able to come together and gaze at the stars above, through the lens of a telescope. Aside from observing the stars, those who attended were able to view some of the real moon rocks, on loan from NASA, collected during the historic Apollo Missions. Several presentations were set up as well, which were seen by the many individuals who were able to attend the event. The high school’s Environmental Action Club, being a club that spreads awareness on environmentally related issues, made two presentations as well. The club was split into two environmentally-related committees, the Air and Light Pollution Committee, and the Ocean Currents and Water Pollution Committee.  Each committee put together a relevant presentation, with the help of the 50 to 60 volunteers who participated in the event. The Air and Light Pollution Committee created a presentation which had the purpose of showing air pollution in our society. The project was directed by club members Emma Germano and Shruthi Gunturu, along with the help of six other volunteers. Both the model and the actual presentation illustrated the amount of pollution that results from factories and the use of cars, and how pollution is affecting our everyday lives. The other group, the Ocean Currents and Water Pollution Committee, also prepared and presented a presentation, with direction from EAC club members Shannen Woo and Ruchi Kapse. The presentation discussed some of the issues regarding water pollution today and possible solutions for them. The presenters concluded by including some fascinating information about water sources on other planets. Attendees and presenters alike enjoyed coming together to discuss and inform others about environmental issues which have relevance in society today. The event was an overall success for the third time, and the Environmental Action Club of MTHS will continue to take part in this annual event for years to come.
